Nebraska Angus Tour
State Angus Enthusiasts Tour
Dry Southwest Nebraska
A hint of fall was in the air as Angus enthusiasts from seven states joined together for the 2002 Nebraska Angus Tour. The event, September 20-21, included stops at several ranches, a bull stud and a feedlot.
The tour kicked off on Friday morning with a stop at the Nebraska Bull service northwest of McCook. Owners Brian and Donetta Schafer hosted breakfast and welcomed visitors to their newly built facilities. Attendees took the opportunity to tour the lab and view several bulls on display.
Black Rose Angus, Culbertson, hosted the second stop of the day. BB Angus, Lebanon, and 81 Angus, Culbertson, also displayed cattle at the stop. In addition to several pens of cattle, tour goers also had the opportunity to see pheasants that the Spenser family raises for hunting.
A lunch stop hosted by the Mick Cox family allowed people to view cattle from Mill Bar Angus and guest, Rocking Lazy J Angus, both of Hayes Center. This stop was held on a field of irrigated pasture, which is somewhat unique to this country. "Uncle" Ed Sabatka, a CAB® licensed restaurant from Broken Bow, NE, catered the lunch stop.
TJ and Kristy Martin, Lamar, hosted the mid-afternoon stop. After a long drive the tourists were eager to view the nice display put together by the Martin family, including calves by a variety of sire groups, bred heifers, and herd bulls.

Following a drive through extreme eastern Colorado and back into Nebraska, the tour made a stop at Windmill Angus, near Haigler. John and Alex Peterson had several pens of cattle on display and the tour drove by their bull development facility.
An evening meal, visiting and friendly competition at Wilson Brothers Angus, Parks, completed day one of the tour. Justin Hohm, a member of the Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) Supply Development team, gave a brief talk on the CAB Program and its growth. Lowell Minert, American Angus Association director, gave an update from the board’s recent meeting. Finally, winners in the cow weight guessing contest were announced.

A brisk wind and the early morning sun greeted visitors to the first stop on Saturday’s tour. Ely Angus hosted the breakfast stop south of McCook. Limestone Angus and Pattera Angus also displayed cattle at the stop.
A short drive to Kansas took the tour to Decatur County Feed Yard, owned by Warren Weibert. After a driving tour of the yard, attendees had the opportunity to see a demonstration of the state-of-the-art processing/ultrasounding facilities.
The final stop of the day found the tour at KJ River Ranch, Indianola. Banzhaf Angus also displayed cattle at the lunch stop. In addition to seeing several pens of cattle set up on the corner of a pivot planted to a new crop of "World Feeder Grass", the tour goers were entertained with a short hay rack ride and friendly golf competition.
